The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) are a set of regulations which cover the use of lifting equipment, with an aim to preventing injury in the workplace. It is a legal requirement for all lifts or lifting equipment to be LOLER tested and is the duty of the equipment owner and/or user to ensure that these inspections take place.
How does this relate to me?
The likelihood is you’ll have some form of lifting equipment for handling heavy pieces of stone worktop in your factory. This includes smaller lifting equipment, such as suction cups, alongside much larger pieces such as automatic lifting clamps and forklift booms!
How often should I do it?
The regulations state that if you’re using your equipment to carry goods, inspections should take place at least once a year. If your equipment moves people, inspections are required twice a year. You’ll also need to get your equipment tested following exceptional circumstances that could jeopardise the safety of the equipment – for example, if it’s been out of use for a long period, or it’s had modifications.
What’s involved in the actual inspection?
Standard LOLER tests include visual examination and functional checks, along with measurements of wear. Sometimes, (depending on the piece of equipment) non-destructive testing and load testing may also be required. Once the inspection is complete, you’ll be given a report which will list any defects that you need to repair/replace.
